Don't forget to turn your clocks forward 1 hour tonight

Its that time of the year again when the clocks go forward, the start of British Summer Time and with it our thoughts turn to the coming summer and warmer longer days..

British Summer Time first came into effect on 21st May 1916 with the Summer Time Act after first being proposed in 1907 by William Willett due to his irritation at the waste of daylight in the early morning in summer. It stayed this way up until 1940 when during the Second World War British Double Summer Time was introduced on a temporary basis which meant the clocks went forward 2 hours when it was not dark until around 11pm . Some say this was to prevent the German bombers having the luxury of darkness for any longer than 3 to 4 hours, also it was supposedly to allow the farmers extra daylight to harvest their crops during a period of food rationing in the UK and even in the winter the clocks were kept 1 hour in front of GMT, after the war was over British Summer Time was returned back to the normal 1 hour forward.

In more recent years and probably every years around this time we have MP's and campaigners raising the question of reintroducing the British Double Summer Time or even a permanent British Summer Time with the thoughts leaning towards possible savings on energy and to also give us more leisure time in the evenings but opponents of this point out that for the North and far North West of Scotland the sunrise would not be until around 10am and in winter school children would be going to and from school in darkness so possibly increasing the risk of accidents to them.

Whatever the arguments both for and against this are, let us all just enjoy that the days are now getting longer and hopefully much warmer, the evenings are getting shorter and Mr Sunshine is on his way & here's hoping you all have a wonderful, warm relaxing Summer.
